Why convert HEIC to PNG
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have shot in by default since iOS 11. It packs photos into roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG. That's great for your phone's storage, but a headache everywhere else: Windows needs paid codecs to open it, many upload forms reject it, and most editing tools and older software simply don't recognize it.
Converting to PNG gives you a lossless, universally supported file that opens everywhere and won't degrade further when edited and re-saved. Because PNG stores every pixel exactly, expect the file to come out larger than the original HEIC. That's the cost of universal compatibility.
How the conversion works
No browser can decode HEIC natively on the web (not even Safari), so this tool ships its own decoder: libheif, the open-source reference HEIF library, compiled to WebAssembly and loaded on demand the first time you convert. Your photo is decoded to raw pixels on your device and re-encoded as PNG, all without a single byte leaving your browser.
Files convert one after another, so you can drop in a large batch without overwhelming your device's memory. Each finished photo shows a preview and its own download button, and "Download all" saves every converted PNG in one go.
Converting many photos at once
Select or drag in as many HEIC files as you like: a camera-roll export, a shared album, a whole shoot. The list shows each file's progress, original size, converted size, and dimensions. If one file in the batch is corrupt or mislabeled, only that file fails; the rest keep converting.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool upload my photos anywhere?
No. The HEIC decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly) runs entirely in your browser, so your photos are decoded and converted on your own device and never sent to a server. That makes it private enough for personal photos.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drag in as many files as you like. They convert one after another, each with its own download button, and "Download all" saves every finished PNG in one go.
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to PNG?
No further quality is lost. PNG is lossless, so it preserves exactly what the HEIC contained. It can't restore detail HEIC's compression already discarded when the photo was taken, but nothing more is thrown away.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses very efficient lossy compression; PNG stores every pixel exactly. A several-MB jump is normal: you're trading bytes for a lossless file that opens everywhere. If size matters more than losslessness, convert to JPG or WebP instead.
Why won't my file convert?
The most common causes: the file isn't really HEIC despite the extension (some apps rename JPGs), or it's a corrupt or partial download. The tool checks the file's actual bytes and tells you which case you hit. Live Photos convert as their still key frame.
How do I stop my iPhone from shooting HEIC in the first place?
On your iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and switch from "High Efficiency" to "Most Compatible". New photos will then be saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos still need converting, which is what this tool is for.
