PNG to BMP Converter

Convert PNG images to uncompressed 24-bit BMP right in your browser — free, instant, and private. BMP is a simple, raw bitmap format read by older Windows software, embedded systems, and certain hardware tools. Your file never leaves your device.

Why convert PNG to BMP

BMP is an old, dead-simple Windows bitmap format that stores pixels uncompressed. You generally only need it for legacy software, some embedded or industrial devices, sign-cutting and print drivers, or programming exercises that expect a raw bitmap to parse. For everyday use, PNG or WebP are far more practical.

Because there's no compression, BMP files are large — often many times the size of the PNG you started with. That's inherent to the format, not something a setting can fix.

What happens to transparency

A standard 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels in your PNG can't be carried over. This tool fills any transparent areas with the background color you choose (white by default) before converting, so they come out solid rather than black.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my PNG anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — the PNG is decoded on a canvas and the BMP is built locally in your browser, so your image is never sent to a server.

Why is the BMP file so much larger than the PNG?

BMP is uncompressed — it stores every pixel as raw bytes with no size optimization at all. A 24-bit BMP is often several times larger than the equivalent PNG. That's a property of the format, not a bug.

What happened to my transparent background?

24-bit BMP has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you pick (white by default) before conversion. If you need to keep transparency, use PNG or WebP instead.

Do I really need BMP?

Rarely. BMP is mainly useful for legacy Windows programs, some embedded/hardware tools, and certain print or sign-cutting workflows. For sharing, the web, or editing, PNG and WebP are smaller and better supported.
